Disadvantages Of Diesel Generators

PhotobucketDiesel generators have their advantages, including improved fuel efficiency. However, as with most things, there are also negative aspects of these units. Learning about both the benefits and drawbacks before making a purchase is a smart move. It will prevent any surprises after ownership and allow the consumer to select the generator with the features and design that match the intended use.

Compared to a gas generator, a diesel model has a higher engine noise. Typically, a diesel unit will be heavier, even in versions like portable generators. These units may require additional work to setup and move from one location to another. Diesel fuel produces environmental pollution from carbon dioxide and soot and engine operation is limited to a certain number of hours in some localities.

Ownership costs may be higher for diesel units because some localities require double-wall containment for onboard fuel tanks. A light load can result in a situation referred to as wet stacking, which causes the diesel engine to run rough and even smoke. This can eventually damage the unit, requiring replacement of the generator, which adds to usage costs.

If a non-portable unit is selected, installation costs will be higher due to the heavier weight of the generator. During permanent mounting, the foundation must be more substantial. Sound-suppressing engine housing costs more and may require installation that is more complex. It is more difficult to start a diesel engine than a gas engine. During extremely cold temperatures, starting fluid may be needed to start the unit.

In cold weather, diesel fuel has the tendency to gel or thicken. Therefore, a winter grade of fuel should be used in diesel generators during the winter. This fuel may not be readily available in all areas of the country. Additives are also available for use with standard diesel fuel in order to prevent gelling but these increase the operational costs.
