3 Best Small Generators

PhotobucketSome people need only a small generator that will run either a freezer or refrigerator during a power outage. In this case, they should bypass the larger and more expensive models and look for portable generators designed to meet their needs. Units with about 1,000 watts can also be used when camping or tailgating.

For about $140, consumers can purchase the Eastern Tools & Equipment (ETQ) TG1200. This unit features 1,000 watts and a noise rating of 65 decibels. A CARB-compliant version is sold for residents of California. Though the manufacturer claims the unit is safe for electronics, inverter technology is not used. The TG1200 can run for up to 5.5 hours at full load or eight hours at 50 percent load on a full tank of gas.

ETQ also makes a highly-rated larger model that sells for approximately $250. This generator features 1,750 watts and surges to 2,250 watts. The four-stroke engine will run for 11 hours at half load on a full tank of gas. A 12-volt DC outlet, two 120-volt AC outlets, low oil indicator, and hour meter are included. A separately available wheel kit costs about $40.

All Power America makes another of the best small generators. The 68-decibel APG3014 costs about $200 and features 1,400 watts with a surge to 2,000 watts. Its four-horsepower, three-stroke engine runs for 9.5 hours at half load per full tank of gas. The generator features a 12-volt DC outlet, two 120-volt AC outlets, low oil shutdown, and battery charging cables.

The warranty on small, portable generators like these is usually one year of coverage for parts and labor. These small generators can provide emergency power to lights or essential appliances. They can also be used for powering appliances used during camping trips. Individuals who need more power should look for generators that feature a higher wattage.
